Global Network for the Study of Human Rights and the Environment

The Global Network for the Study of Human Rights and the Environment is a network of researchers, policy-makers, lawyers, NGOs, and activists working on human rights and environment with a goal of a better future for the environment and humans.

Friends of the Earth  International
As the largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of Earth works toward achieving sustainable living and solutions within an equitable framework for all societies. With over forty years of experience, they campaign for mobilization and resistance and have had many victories. With members all over the world, Friends of Earth combats the most urgent environmental and social issues. They want to challenge the current economic model and corporate globalization. Because they believe in collective efforts, their volunteers and donations are what makes them so strong.

Client Earth
Client Earth is an international organization that brings environmental injustices to court. They use the law to protect the climate and its people and have been successful in a number of cases. They use the law as a tool to change the system and believe in this approach because governments and businesses listen to the law. With locations worldwide they have a strong presence, involvement extends from donations to working with the organization.

Environmental Justice Foundation
Environmental Justice Foundation is an NGO that works to record and expose environmental injustices that are not widely known. Their team consists of campaigners, researchers, filmmakers around the world that collaborate together to shine a light on any environmental rights that are being abused. The work is achieved through the power of documentation and film; they have made countless short films that address hidden issues ranging from injustices at sea to injustices in industrialization. There are countless ways to get involved that include volunteering and even forming campaign at individual universities.

Global WITNESs

Global witness aims to expose corruption from the exploitation of natural resources and how it leads to conflict and poverty. They do this by investigating and publishing reports that expose these injustices. Reports and investigations have made new headlines on countless occasions with one of their biggest investigations being the corruption surrounding the blood diamond industry. With a worldwide network, they are funded mainly by trusts and foundations. Ways of getting involved are limited to donating and working with them as a researcher or on the board.

Deep South Center for Environmental Justice

Founded by Beverly Wright, PhD. in 1992, the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice seeks to improve the lives of people harmed by pollution and vulnerable to climate change in the Gulf Coast region of the United States. It is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The organization is a resource for environmental justice research, policy, and education. Through collaborative partnerships between community members and academics, the DSCEJ empowers communities to monitor environmental hazards in their neighborhood; understand the risks of toxic exposures; research online environmental data; know their rights and the duties of governmental agencies; and develop strategic advocacy for policies and decisions that prevent and remedy unsafe environmental conditions. Additionally, the organization conducts health and safety training programs for workers involved in environmental remediation and restoration, emergency response, construction, asbestos removal, mold removal, lead abatement, and hazardous materials/waste handling.

Little Village Environmental Justice Organization

LVEJO was founded in 1994 by public school parents who learned about the potential exposure of their children to dangerous particles during school renovations at an elementary school in Chicago, Illinois. From its beginning, it developed a strong youth leadership program. Over the years, with success in campaigns for clean power, public transit, and open space, the organization has become a great example of community organizing. In 2013, Executive Director Kim Wasserman-Nieto was awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize.

Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice

In 1997, grassroots community and environmental justice leaders from urban, rural and indigenous communities in California and Arizona formed the Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice work to support community struggles and help change government and industry policies and practices to protect health and promote environmental justice. Its board is comprised entirely of grassroots leaders from environmental justice communities. An example of their successful campaigning is protecting sacred Indigenous lands from a proposed nuclear waste dump in the Mojave Desert of California. Their work has led to closing down polluting facilities, defeating proposals for new polluting facilities, improving industry policies and practices, encouraging safe clean up of toxic sites, and improving regional, state, and federal environmental justice decision-making. The organization is based in San Francisco, CA, and offers volunteer and internship opportunities.

Azul

Azul was founded in 2011 to bring Latinxs perspectives and participation to ocean conservation. Based in Oakland, CA, the organization successfully led the campaign for a single use plastic bag ban in California and routinely advocates for ocean and coastal policy in the state’s capital. Azul particularly works to ensure that decision-making protects or increases affordable access to the state’s coastal resources.

Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition

SVTC was formed in 1982 by high-tech workers, community members, law enforcement, emergency workers and environmentalists in response to toxins and other waste generated from the rapidly growing high-tech industry. Through research, advocacy and grassroots organizing, the organization has worked to hold the high-tech industry accountable and led to a shift towards toxic-free, recyclable products, strong worker and community protections, and green technological innovations. Although it is based in Silicon Valley, its work and impacts are global.

WE ACT for Environmental Justice

In 1988, community activists joined forces with environmental litigators to fight for landmark changes in Northern Manhattan’s air quality. In 1991, the group attended the First People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. where the Principles of Environmental Justice were created. Led by a team of activists, lawyers, community organizers, public health experts, and local residents, WE ACT’s work is mostly in New York City and the northeastern U.S. Its goal is to ensure that residents are informed and engaged in decision-making on key issues that impact their health and community. The organization also provides worker training programs and certificates including OSHA safety training and solar photovoltaic installation.

California Environmental justice alliance

The California Environmental Justice Alliance is a coalition of grassroots, community-based organizations. It operates throughout California to improve environmental conditions in low-income communities and communities of color through policy. The organization was formed in 2001 and has offices in Northern and Southern California. Member and partner organizations include:

EUROPE

EnvJustice Research Project
Research group funded by the European Union through the European Union Council that wants to expand the research done into environmental justice conflicts. They have produced countless scientific papers about environmental justice conflicts. The team is composed of thirteen different scholars who come from diverse backgrounds. They also share knowledge through internships and summer school.

Small island states

Fiji Environmental Law Association
Based in Fiji, this group works to provide legal aid to community groups to help combat and improve the impacts that these coastal communities face as a result of mismanagement of fisheries and degradation of the coastal and marine environment. They aim to help the community be aware of the laws and regulations surrounding the management of fisheries. They also aim to provide legal aid to any NGOs or community groups who are working on sustainable management of fisheries and any other natural resources. They are funded through grants, private, and government organizations. Ways to get involved include volunteering and donating.

SOUTH AMERICA

Indigenous Environmental Network
Formado por gente Indígena, Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) funciona para apoyar, educar, y reconocer sobre las cuestiones ambientales y económicas de justicia. IEN logra hacer esto por la organización de campañas, acciones directas, y conciencia pública. La organización quiere construir transparencia entre la comunidad y el desarrollo de iniciativas para la política impacto. Dedicados a proteger y respetar todo de la Madre tierra y las Indígenas conocimiento, IEN se concentrarse en educación entre la comunidad y jóvenes. Con un gran presencia, IEN tiene muchas alianzas como Climate Justice Alliance y campanas de abusos de Indígena derechos sobre las tierra. 

Acción Ecológica
Como una de las organizaciones más reconocidos en América Latina, Acción Ecológica fue formado por grupos de la universidad en Educador. La organización se enfoque en campañas contra problemas asociados con la perfocacion de petróleo y la destrucción de bosques costeros. Acción Ecológica existe para soportar comunidades Indígenas y ayudar différentes coalición de fuerzas sociales. Por ejemplo, dirigieron la lucha contra los planes del presidente Ecuatoriano, Rafael Correa para expandir la industria minera. Con más de veinte años de experiencia, Acción Ecológica he tenido mucho influencia en socio-ambiental de Educador. Corrientemente están trabajando con familias campesinas y comunas que están enfrentando denuncias sobre el derecho por agua.
